The Aperol Spritz has been having a bit of a renaissance the last few years–here’s what all the fuss is about…

This iconic, bright orange cocktail is served in a wine glass with plenty of ice and a thick slice of orange. It’s ice-cold, fizzy and herbaceous with a pleasantly bitter-sweet after taste. Made of only four simple ingredients; Aperol, Prosecco, club soda and orange. The best part… once you get the hang of making a few you don’t even need to measure! This refreshing, Italian drink is perfect for sipping any time of day from brunch to dinner.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

Aperol

Aperol is a vibrant and herbaceous apéritif made from orange, rhubarb, vanilla, and herbs. The exact recipe is top secret and has been made the same way for over 100 years! Originating from Padua, Italy, Aperol is enjoyed before a meal to stimulate the appetite.

Prosecco

No need to splash out on a high-end bottle of Prosecco, something in the $10-$15 range is perfect as it will be mixed with other ingredients. Look for a bottle labeled brut, which means dry, raw, or unrefined. A dry French champagne or Spanish cava can also be substituted.

Sparkling Water or Club Soda

Both seltzer and club soda are suitable.

Orange

A thick slice of orange highlights the cocktail’s tangy citrus notes.

Recipe Steps:

Once you get the hang of mixing a few you really don’t need to measure the ingredients.

  1. Fill a glass with ice. Pour in the Aperol followed by the Prosecco then give it a quick stir. Top the glass off with sparkling water and garnish with an orange slice.

FAQs and Expert Tips

Can I use Campari instead of Aperol?

Yes! Campari is another Italian aperitif, often used interchangeably with Aperol. Campari is less sweet and slightly more bitter than Aperol. If you’re not a fan of Aperol’s sweetness, swap it for the slightly more bitter Campari.

Campari Spritz: 3oz of Campari with 3oz prosecco, top with sparkling water, pour over ice, and garnish with a lemon wedge.

Can Aperol Spritz be made in a pitcher?

Yep! Combine one 750ml bottle of Aperol with one 750ml bottle of Prosecco and 3/4 liter club soda. Pour into ice-filled wine glasses and garnish with an orange slice.
